1839 April 17 Meet Donna Maria de Gloria |
...Some distance off a lady with a gentleman on each side of her & several servants in handsome liveries behind, all on horse back, as they were slowing approaching me, the handsome liveries of the servants combined as guard being turned out as they passed a barrack made me imagine that it could be no other than the Queen, in this I was not mistaken; accordingly, when just abreast of her I bowed, received a considered big smile and bow in return. The king seeing her return my salute (for his back was towards me as he was walking to her) turned round and taking off his hat made me a low bow; - from their riding so slowing I could not have had a finer opportunity of seeing her; she is so excessively stout that even with the gentle motion of the horse one could actually see her fat shake and tremble |
