In 870 it fell to the lot of the Arabs who were in the same year driven from it by the Greeks; 34 years after however the Arabs again landed when they entirely exterminated the Greeks. - The Normans having taken possession of it in1090 ceded it to the Germans who retained it for 72 years when France added it to her possessions - It subsequently however became attached to the Kingdom of Arragon, Castille, & Sicily. -   These vast & numerous changes of government having taken place Charles 5th annexed the Maltese islands to his dominions; & in 1530 he established the Knights of the order of St. John; the superior of which order he styled Grand Master of Malta at the same time investing this Grand Master with conditional sovereignty. - In June 1795 Napoleon Bonaparte took possession of Malta as a pre...
