Malta has become one of the most fertile & important islands in the world; from a place of refuge for pirates of the most diabolical descent now it has under the fostering care of Britain became the resort of an honourable class of merchants whose competition and enterprise has rendered it more important to a mercantile point of view than even Lisbon & Florence. -
Saturday 27 Engaged during the whole day in visiting different parts of the principal city Valletta; pulling round the harbour examining the fortifications & c- ; the streets of the city are extremely neat & regular, but strongly resemble a continuous flight of stairs & the harbour appears to be exceedingly safe & commodious ; should any of my friends by the bye visit Malta I must be allowed to strongly recommend them to the Casa of Joe Maccalife in the Strada Reale, Therm 95
